Making Time Tangible
For preschool-aged children, time is an abstract concept that can only be fully comprehended when attached to other tangible markers. Telling a three-year-old they have “five minutes” rarely works — five minutes feels different every time.
Lickety Split turns that abstract concept into a concrete audio and visual experience. Carefully chosen classical music selections each support a different everyday task. When appropriate, an accelerating tempo helps kids recognize how much time remains. Together with an animated hourglass character, these cues set a friendly challenge and keep kids focused until the task is done.
Two Kinds of Timers
Plus minute timers and your own songs.
Six tasks to race the music
The goal is to finish the task — like getting dressed or making the bed — and tap “I did it!” before the music runs out. If the music gets there first, the duck wins.
- 1Getting ready to leave in five minutes
- 2Getting dressed
- 3Getting ready for a meal
- 4Cleaning up your room
- 5Making your bed
- 6Getting into PJs
Four tasks to keep going
Some things take a set amount of time. Here the goal is to keep going until the music ends — then comes a happy laugh and a “Fantastic! You did it!”
- 1Brushing teeth (for a full two minutes)
- 2Taking turns
- 3Reading time
- 4Study time
Plus minute timers and your own songs
Need a timer without a set task? Choose 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 or 20 minutes, in either mode. Or pick any song on your device and its length becomes the timer — so the timer fits your family, not the other way around. (Your own songs work in the iPhone and Android apps.)
